One of Wilmette’s colorful historical characters is Bertram B. Udell (1877-1956). He owned the Wilmette printing firm that preceded today’s Mid-Central Printing, and he published a free weekly newspaper, “Wilmette Announcements.”“B.B.” was the son of a downstate printer and newspaper publisher. As a young man, he came to the North Shore and operated a commercial print shop at various sites, eventually at his home at 302 Park Ave., Wilmette. He started publishing his newspaper in 1913 and continued until 1933.
