The holidays were extra cheerful in the newsroom this year, thanks to our loyal readers who submitted their cards for our annual Holiday Greeting Card Contest.

There were so many submissions to the contest that editors laid out all of the masterpieces on our conference room table to walk around and check them out.

Among the submissions, there were a variety of photos of smiling North Shore families, homemade sketches, felt cut-outs and cartoons.

While all of the cards were original and cheerful, we narrowed down our top three for prizes. Thank you to all the families who submitted cards to the contest. We hope you had a nice holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Here’s a look at our winners:

Most Funny: The Nathan Family, of Wilmette

Shefali Nathan, of Wilmette, sent us a card featuring original artwork by her husband, Naveen. In an ode to “The Simpsons,” he wished families and friends a Happy New Year by drawing a family portrait including himself, Siddharth, Niyati and Shefali. On the back of the card is a message that includes a note for everyone to “make a resolution to laugh every day (unless it involves tickling, don’t do it, it’s mean.”

For the win, Nathan will receive a $25 gift certificate from Convito Cafe & Market, 1515 Sheridan Road, Wilmette. Find out more at convitocafeandmarket.com.

Editors’ Choice: The Butz Family, of Northbrook

The Butz Family will always have Paris.

22nd Century Media editors selected the Northbrook family’s aesthetically pleasing, charming submission as their favorite holiday card submitted in 2019.

The card’s front shows family members Juliette, 3, Ava, 6, and Jimmy, 1, alongside parents Jim and Chrissy posing for a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower. Additional Butz family photos in Paris are featured on the back of the card.

The Butz’s submission earned rave reviews from judges for its simplistic, yet simultaneously elegant, design, composition and diction.

The Butz family will take home a gift card from Northbrook’s Marcello’s Father and Son for the winning submission.

Most Creative: The Hauldren Family, of Northfield

Julia Hauldren has become a repeat winner of this contest as her family’s card creations always stun us, this year being no different. The Northfield family’s 2019 holiday card was a play on The Beatles’ “Let It Be” album. The front of the card depicts the four Hauldren children each photographed to look like the band members, just like the real album cover. Inside, there’s a throwback photo of the children playing instruments with the phrase “Gonna tell my kids these were The Beatles” (a popular saying on the internet). Beatles’ quotes are used throughout, even on the back of the card atop a picture of mom and dad, Dave and Julia, photographed in Kyoto, where they lived in the 1990s. The Hauldrens take home a prize donated by Grateful Bites Pizza Shoppe, 899 Green Bay Road, Winnetka.
